No-mow Lawns
Every weekend in America, 54 million people mow their lawns. There is a heavy environmental impact that comes from the fuel use and emissions, and the task is time consuming as well. Installing areas of no-mow lawn is an environmentally friendly alternative, and is aesthetically pleasing and less expensive over the long run.
A no-mow seed mix is a combination of slow growing creeping grasses that can grow in sun or shade and is drought tolerant once established. The grass is fine bladed and can be left to grow or mowed if you prefer. This type of seeding is perfect for stabilizing slopes and can replace areas that would otherwise be mulched. Mulching is a labor intensive job that needs to be repeated yearly and can be quite expensive for large areas.
Wildflowers can be seeded in with no-mow grass to form a low growing meadow which attracts bees and butterflies. Since typical turf areas are devoid of wildlife, a meadow is great to have in areas that can be left in a more natural state. Plant some sunflowers and native shrubs among the grass, and shelter and a source of food for birds becomes another added benefit.
Here in the mountains, most of us have slopes in our yards that are hard to walk on and even harder to mow. A no-mow mix can stabilize a slope without the hassle of mowing it weekly and is attractive at the same time. Give consideration to leaving areas of your landscape in a more naturalized state with a no-mow approach and save time for yourself and benefit the environment, too.
